The Dartmouth History Research Group were recently given a copy of a diary passed to Nigel Way of the Royal Castle Hotel by a guest, who is a descendant of the writer. No one can now remember the guest’s name, so if he sees this article will he please contact the Group so that we can thank him?

The Shipyard Apprentice

An account by a Dartmothian of the time when his father worked for Philip & Son Shipbuilder at Noss and Sandquay and his own apprenticeship as a draughtsman with them which commenced in 1937. There are accounts of the activities that took place during his time there and a outline of Drawing Office procedure from enquiry to delivery of a vessel. view document

My Dear Children

Two letters written by Mary Eliza Godfrey nee Giles (born 1795 in Tavistock (?) who married Joseph James Godfrey, Surgeon, of Liverpool 4th January 1821 in Chatham. Lived in Chatham and Liverpool, brother William Giles was Dickens' first schoolmaster in Chatham.
The first letter recalls her grandparents and early life in Tavistock with a brief mention of Dartmouth. The second letter is an account of her life in Dartmouth from 1799 until 1910 where her father was the Baptist Minister.
