Harold White  Tapes 1 & 2

Interviewed by Ray Freeman 1982/83 these tapes reflect Whites personal views on some aspects of

 past events & are in some areas at odds with other records.

 

Track 1            Dartmouth slums, St Saviours Court, Lack of proper sewage system, Health,

(Tape 1)           Prosperty of town linked to the river, housing requirements, Coal Bunkering trade

                        BRNC Staff. Ships Laid up & ancillary trade Bayards Cove & Silver Street slums

 

                        Building of Britannia Avenue, House design & rent, land purchase Re-development                   

                        of St Saviours Court, Electricity & water supplies.

 

                        Visit of King Edward VII to BRNC in 1904. Unemployment relief scheme 1820 -                                

                        1825 filling in of Mayors Avenue area. Building of Market. Higher Ferry, first steam                  

                        ferry. Mount Boone & Ridge Hill built for ferry access? Ferry bought by Phillips                                   

                        family. Totnes RDC & ferry access?

                       

                        Seale family, Norton House, Mount Boone House, Seal family at Hill Head. Mrs                                  

                        Sullivan (Widow of Sir Arthur) & Percy Blashford a master at BRNC. Involvement                  

                        in town matters

 

                        Holdsworth as a MP, Castle Govenor. Castle Battery & Corporal Major.

 

                        Dartmouth Charities, Lords enquiriey & amalgamation. Charity & Corporation land.                 

                        Sale of Corporation property, Charity accounts.

 

Track 2            Account of talk given by HW. School leaving age, building of Boys School Victoria

(Tape 2)           Rd. Mr Nance, wealth land owner & master at BRNC, built & equiped youth club in                

                        Roseville St. Left money for upkeep & steward to run it, registered with Charity                                   

                        Commission (no evidence of this with commission) Trustees self appointing.

 

                        Wartime evacuees, Swedish students * Reg Green. Ivy Lane chapel & use by                          

                        Grammer School. YMRC & Rugby Club (HW not happy with how this came about                 

                        & was told not to interfere, he asserts that money has been misappropriated)

 

 

Note.               Harold White’s account of events etc are rather suspect in several areas & should be                

                        checked, he was probably into his 80s at the time of the interview.
