Track 1. David

Phillip ship yard trades, problems after WWII, competition from Germany & Japan, Loss of Government contracts, Decline of yard in the 1950’s & 60’s, Sold to Reeves of Totnes, moved into yacht building.

 

Track 2. David & Fred (Father)

Working background, Reserve Fleet in Dartmouth after WWII, ships scrapped or sold. Coal Lumpers – fuelling & bunkering ships, plans for installation to fuel ship from Warfleet in 1930’s

Fred lived in Higher St demolished in 1920’s slim clearance, worked as a coal lumper, health problems, Ernie Bevin established the Stevedores Union in Dartmouth. Mentions Channel Coaling Co, Gas Works, Electric Light Co & Education in Dartmouth before WWII.

            Preparations for D-Day, build-up of troops, LCT’s LCI etc all the way up the river. Wages in Dartmouth before WWII.
