Summary

                Seems to be about who is responsible for building and repainting new Church, now St Saviour's                 consecrated in 1372, and maintaining the chaplan.

 

Item I

Schedule of deeds of property dated 1882 said to have been given to maintain the chapel/ chaplan .

 

Item 2

Translation of 1372 deed between Abbot of Torre and the inhabitants of Dartmouth. Main point is that it must not prejudice Mother Church Townstal who kept all the tithes obligations etc.

 

We will fully support the charges of building the new chapel and chancel and after of restoring and repairing them of all defects, and of funding and supporting the chaplaincy, Books etc. If the parishioners neglect to do so there will be no devine services, sacraments in the chapel. We do a bind orselves and heirs and successors to observe same.

 

Names of parishioners; John William William, William John, Roger Gilbert, John William, and John Walter, and the Mayor and community of Dartmouth.

 

Item 3

Full translation of the deed (number two in schedule) of gift to pay for mass in Church by Mabel Ford, widow

 

 Another gift by Mabel Ford in 1436.

 

Follows a transcription of all documents in schedule given for religious purposes,

 

One gift in 1486 is for new tower and bulwark in lime and stone adjoiningly the castle, garnished with guns and artillery, £40 yearly to be give to the Mayor for ever from customs duties

 

1579 Rental of Dartmouth Corporation

dates go on to 1855 and 1866. Objects extend to maintaining Bulwarks Conduits and poor)

 

recites  how each group of trustees of all corporation property handed it on to next to group at intervals (eg 1836, after the Municipal Corporations Act) then 1857, 1855.

 

29/9/1855   Indenture between A B Harris and other surviving a trustees of property of Dartmouth Corporation, Mayor of Dartmouth, Robert L Fox treasurer of Dartmouth,  Nicholas Pitts of South Allington. Consideration £225 lease of 75 years.  (description follows) 12 acres in parish of  East Portlemouth called Slades reserved to trustees and successors all timber now standing or which may be here after stand on premises with the right to fell and take away same and also all mines and quarries , may dig up and work?With liberty to hunt and shoot the same, and to replant timber. Rent of 10 shillings yearly to be paid by lease in quarterly instalments ( lease would expire 1930)

 

11/4/1866  Indenture between A B Harris and surviving trustees of property of Dartmouth Corporation Mayor and Burgess's Dartmouth Richard Egg treasurer of Dartmouth Borough William Lamb Yabsley of East Portlemouth . Consideration £54 and surrender the remainder of lease of  44 years. Description, Grist Mill known as Slades Water Mill in the parish of East Portlemouth , all Weir's, LEates etc and one piece of land on East side , reserving mineral rights and timber oak, ash and elm now or in future growth rent £3 yearly paid quarterly.
